    Unusual noises are often one of the first signs that something is wrong with a telehandler. Whining, grinding, knocking, popping, or squealing sounds can indicate problems with the hydraulic system, drivetrain, engine, or other critical components. Identifying unusual noises early can help prevent more extensive damage and costly repairs.


    Common Causes

    • Hydraulic pump cavitation 
    • Worn hydraulic pump 
    • Low hydraulic oil level 
    • Worn wheel bearings 
    • Driveline or U-joint wear 
    • Transmission problems 
    • Differential or axle damage 
    • Loose or damaged boom wear pads 
    • Worn boom extension chains 
    • Engine accessory or belt problems 


    What to Inspect First

    Before requesting service, perform these basic inspections:

    • Determine where the noise is coming from—engine compartment, boom, transmission, axle, or hydraulic system. 
    • Note when the noise occurs: at idle, while driving, while steering, or while operating the boom. 
    • Check the hydraulic oil and engine coolant levels. 
    • Inspect underneath the machine for fluid leaks. 
    • Look for warning lights or fault codes on the instrument display. 
    • Listen for changes in the noise as engine speed increases. 
    • Inspect visible boom components for loose hardware, damaged wear pads, or obvious signs of contact. 


    When to Stop Operating the Machine

    Stop operating the telehandler immediately if:

    • Grinding or knocking noises become severe. 
    • Hydraulic pump noise suddenly increases. 
    • Loud popping or snapping sounds come from the boom. 
    • The machine begins vibrating excessively. 
    • Warning lights accompany the unusual noise. 
    • Burning odors or smoke are present. 

    Ignoring abnormal noises can allow minor problems to become major component failures.
